Artist's Statement
In my travels throughout India, Indonesia, and Manitoba’s wilderness parks, there are moments where I look up from the busy work of hiking, exploring or navigating, and spontaneously, everything stops. Moments where the power of the landscape, be it peaceful or chaotic, majestic or microscopic, brings a keen sense of being out of my self; totally immersed in the moment. All else, even a sense of identity, melts away. All there is to do is be still, and breathe and listen. I am curious about how landscapes provide unique opportunities to be completely present through their beauty or intensity.

 

2010: Hugh Conacher (Hybrid Human)

Show dates: October 7th, 2010-January 15th, 2011

Hybrid Human was a collaborative program that was spearheaded by nationally acclaimed painter Wanda Koop, with contemporary dance performer and choreographer Jolene Bailie, sound artist Susan Chafe, and photographer Hugh Conacher. The GSAC installation features Conacher’s photographs which meld Wanda Koop’s artwork with the real-life form of contemporary dancer Jolene Bailie. Hybrid Human presents an investigation of artificial intelligence, robotics, and the human body’s integration and understanding of our technologically mediated world.
